925 vs S925 vs 999 Silver: What the Hallmark Means (UK)

Jul 07, 2025
925 vs S925 Silver: What the Hallmark Really Means (UK Guide) - JewelHub.co.uk

Updated 10 September 2026. This guide now covers 足銀 999 fine silver alongside 925 and S925, explains why the two sterling stamps mean the same thing, and adds the UK hallmark weight threshold most buyers are never told about.

💎 What Does 925, S925 or 足銀 999 Mean in Silver Jewellery?

If you’ve ever flipped over a piece of silver jewellery and spotted a tiny stamp — 925, S925 or 足銀 999 — you’ve just uncovered a clue to its quality. These hallmarks aren’t just decorative; they’re shorthand for purity, origin, and trust.

🔍 Understanding 925 and S925

Eight 925 sterling silver adjustable rings - floral, heart, star and bow designs from the JewelHub ring collection

925 means the piece is made of 92.5% pure silver, with the remaining 7.5% typically composed of copper or other metals to enhance strength. This alloy is known as sterling silver, and it’s the global standard for high-quality silver jewellery.

S925 simply adds an “S” for “Sterling.” It’s also sterling silver, with the same 92.5% purity. The difference often comes down to regional stamping practices:

  • 925 is more common in Western markets (UK, US, Europe)
  • S925 is frequently seen in jewellery manufactured in Asia (China, Thailand)

Both are legitimate, and neither mark is a lower grade than the other. What the stamp fixes is the 92.5%; what it doesn’t tell you is what the maker put in the other 7.5%. If you or your customers have metal sensitivities, it’s worth asking about the alloy composition — a few pieces include nickel or zinc, which can cause irritation. That is a question about the maker, and it applies equally whether the piece is stamped 925 or S925.

📊 925 vs. S925: Quick Comparison

Feature 925 Hallmark S925 Hallmark
Meaning 92.5% pure silver (sterling) Same — 92.5% sterling silver
"S" Prefix Not present Stands for Sterling
Common Usage Western markets Asian markets
Certification Full UK assay hallmark required only at 7.78g and above Same rule — UK law goes by weight, not by which stamp is used
Alloy Composition The other 7.5% is chosen by the maker — usually copper Same — decided by the maker, not by the stamp
Skin Sensitivity Ask about nickel if you have sensitive skin Same question, same answer — ask the maker either way
Durability Depends on the alloy and how solid the piece is Same — the stamp doesn’t indicate hardness
Tarnish Rate Tarnishes slowly and reversibly Same — storage and humidity matter far more than the mark
Resale Value Set by weight, condition and the silver market Same — neither stamp is a resale grade

The practical takeaway: read the stamp for purity, then ask about the alloy, any plating, and the weight. Those three answers tell you far more than the choice between 925 and S925 ever will.

🌙 And What About 足銀 999 Fine Silver?

Silver bangle rings with floral and chain motifs, shown in two rows

足銀 999 — also written 999, S999 or “fine silver” — is 99.9% pure silver. The Chinese characters 足銀 mean “full silver,” and the mark is most common on pieces made for the Chinese and Hong Kong markets, where purity itself is the selling point.

Two things surprise people about it:

  • 999 costs more per gram, not less. It contains more silver, so the raw metal is dearer, and 足銀 999 is traditionally sold at a premium and priced by weight plus a labour charge. It is not the budget option.
  • It is roughly twice as soft as sterling. That is exactly why rings are made from 925: a 999 band goes out of round on the hand, and a 999 claw won’t hold a stone reliably. The 7.5% copper in sterling is what buys the springiness.

Where that softness becomes a feature is in solid pieces — bangles, chunky pendants — and in adjustable open bands, where you want the metal to ease to your finger rather than spring back.

925 / S925 Sterling 足銀 999 Fine
Silver content 92.5% 99.9%
The rest 7.5%, usually copper Almost nothing — effectively nickel-free
Cost per gram Lower Higher
Hardness Roughly twice as hard Noticeably softer
Colour Bright white Whiter and warmer still
Best for Rings, stone settings, chains, clasps, daily wear Adjustable bands, solid bangles, chunky pendants

Neither is “better” outright — they’re built for different jobs. On both, a soft grey or golden patina is normal and polishes off. Green in the grooves is the warning sign: that points to base metal under a silver layer, not solid silver at all. More on silver’s character in Silver, The Moon Metal.

🛡️ What Is a 925 Hallmark?

Nine 925 sterling silver rings with decorative charm and motif designs

The 925 stamp—sometimes seen as .925, 925, or S925—is a purity mark confirming the metal is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals. It’s a legal and quality indicator used across the jewellery industry. In the UK, hallmarking has been mandatory for precious metals since 1327, and only independent Assay Offices are authorized to apply them.

A full hallmark may include:

  • Sponsor’s Mark: Identifies the maker or brand
  • Fineness Mark: Indicates metal purity (e.g. 925)
  • Assay Office Mark: Shows where the item was tested (e.g. Anchor for Birmingham)

Optional marks may include date letters, commemorative symbols, or international control marks for cross-border authenticity. (Gold follows the same system — see what a gold hallmark really means.)

One point worth knowing before you worry: UK law requires hallmarking on silver articles of 7.78g and above. Below that weight a piece is exempt — and most rings, charms and light chains fall under it, so the 925 or S925 you can see is the maker’s own fineness mark rather than an Assay Office hallmark. That is entirely legitimate. On some designs there is nowhere to put it at all: a band made of hearts or beads the whole way round has no flat panel, so a careful maker hides the stamp inside one of the shapes instead. Turn the piece slowly under a lamp before concluding it is unmarked.

🧪 How to Verify a 925 Stamp

  • Magnet Test: Sterling silver is non-magnetic. If it sticks, it may contain iron or nickel.
  • Weight & Colour: Genuine sterling silver has a cool, heavy feel and bright white sheen.
  • Acid Test Kits: Available online to confirm silver content.
  • Certification: Look for accompanying marks from recognized assay offices.

💡 Quick Tips for Silver Jewellery Lovers

  • Look for hallmarks like 925, S925 or 足銀 999 as a sign of quality
  • Ask about alloy composition if you have sensitive skin
  • Use a soft cloth to clean and store in a dry pouch — see our silver care card and the JewelCare hub
  • Avoid chlorine, perfumes, and lotions to reduce tarnish
  • Don’t judge by stamp alone—weight, colour, and finish matter too

🧴 Keeping It Bright — The Two Things That Do the Work

Town Talk silver polishing cloth and anti-tarnish storage strips for 925 sterling silver, with dated storage labels

Tarnish is a surface reaction, not damage — and two inexpensive things reverse and prevent it:

  • Silver Polishing Cloth, 12.5×17.5cm — lifts tarnish off. Buff dry, never wash it: washing removes the agent that does the work. £4.95
  • Anti-Tarnish Storage Strips, 36 pack — absorb the sulphur in the air before it reaches your silver. One per sealed bag or box, replaced about every three months. £5.95

Cloth for what has already happened, strips so it does not happen again. Full guidance on the 925 Silver CareCard.

Can you read a hallmark? Take the 925 test.

Every answer is somewhere above in this article. Get all five right and the 925 Sterling Silver Care Kit is yours free — free UK postage, no purchase needed, no payment details asked for. Outside the UK, postage is added at checkout.

01What does the number 925 actually tell you?

Correct. 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper or other metals for strength — that alloy is sterling silver.

Not quite. 925 is a purity figure, not a weight or a date. Scroll back up to the opening section.

02In S925, what does the "S" stand for?

Correct. S925 and 925 describe the same 92.5% standard — the "S" is a stamping convention, most common in Asian manufacturing.

Close, but no. The "S" is short for Sterling. See the comparison table above.

03You hold a magnet to a silver bracelet and it sticks. What does that suggest?

Correct. Sterling silver is non-magnetic. A pull means something else is in there.

Not this one. Sterling silver does not respond to a magnet — see the verification section above.

04How long has hallmarking been compulsory for precious metals in the UK?

Correct — 1327. One of the oldest consumer protection systems anywhere, and only independent Assay Offices may apply the mark.

Older than that. The date is in the hallmark section above.

05An anchor appears in a full UK hallmark. What is it telling you?

Correct. The anchor is Birmingham's Assay Office mark. The maker is shown separately, by the sponsor's mark.

Not this one. The anchor is an Assay Office mark — it says where the piece was tested.

JewelCare 925 Sterling Silver Care Kit — two clear zip bags holding a polishing cloth and anti-tarnish storage strips.

Your reward is the 925 Sterling Silver Care Kit, normally £2.95. One tap loads it in your basket at £0.00 with free UK delivery already applied.

What's inside — and why each part matters

① Polishing cloth, 9 x 6cm. Impregnated with a mild cleaning agent that lifts silver sulphide, the black film that forms as 925 reacts with sulphur in the air. Buff dry with short strokes. Never rinse or wash it — washing removes the agent that does the work. Grey marks on the cloth are the tarnish you have just taken off.

② Two anti-tarnish strips. These absorb the sulphur compounds before they reach your silver. They don't coat the piece; they remove what attacks it. Write the date on the printed panel and replace at around three months.

③ Two zip bags. Here is the part most people get wrong. A zip bag on its own is not good storage — sealed with nothing else it traps humidity and tarnish gases against the metal. Sealed with a strip inside, it becomes one of the most effective methods there is: a small, dry, controlled space the strip can keep clean. That is why the kit gives you one strip per bag.

The method: wipe dry → into the bag → strip in with it → date it → seal → somewhere cool and dry, never the bathroom. Don't seal pearls, opal, turquoise or coral this way; organic gems need a little ambient humidity.

🧠 A Bit of History

Sterling silver has been used in jewellery for centuries. The 925 standard dates back to 12th-century England, where it was used to regulate coinage and fine metalwork. Today, it remains a trusted benchmark for quality and purity.
