Five Fish Ring — A Blessing Counted Out Around the Band

There is no plain stretch on this ring. Five fish run nose-to-tail the entire way round, each one 11mm long, tails overlapping the next head so the line never breaks until it reaches the adjustment gap at the back. The bodies are stippled to a soft matte and the fins left polished; the second and fourth fish each carry three engraved strokes across the flank, so the band alternates plain, marked, plain, marked, plain as it turns on the finger. Just 2.2mm tall and 1.3mm thick, 1g in 999 fine silver, stamped 足銀 999.

Fish are almost never shown singly in Chinese ornament, and the count is rarely accidental. Worn as a band, five fish read as one continuous line of movement — which is its own idea: 如魚得水, “like a fish finding water”, is what you say about someone who has found the place they belong.

Five, running nose-to-tail round the full circumference. They stop only at the opening at the back, which is what lets the ring adjust. There is no plain reverse section — whichever way it turns on your finger, you are looking at fish.

The second and fourth fish each carry three short engraved strokes across the body; the first, third and fifth are left smooth. Alternating them gives the band a rhythm at close range and stops five identical shapes reading as a repeat pattern.
