Enamel Ring — Six Colours Banded Round Silver

The band is drawn like a length of bamboo — slim polished sections that swell slightly and then narrow at each joint — and at every joint a collar of enamel wraps right around the silver. Six of them, in pink, yellow, red, green, sky blue and burgundy, each one flat opaque colour against a mirror-bright ground. At 1.7mm tall and 1.8mm thick it is a very slim band, 0.937g of solid 925 sterling silver stamped S925.

Enamel is powdered glass fused to metal with heat, and it is one of the oldest ways of getting permanent colour onto jewellery — thousands of years older than any paint or coating, and the reason colour survives on objects that have been in the ground since antiquity. 1. Is the colour enamel or paint?
Enamel — fused glass, not a coating brushed on top. That is why it has depth and a glassy surface rather than looking flat and plasticky, and why it holds its colour indefinitely instead of fading or yellowing. It is the same technique used on antique jewellery that still looks bright after a century.

2. Can the enamel chip?
It can, and that is the honest trade-off for real enamel. Glass is hard but brittle: it will not scratch off, scuff or fade, but a sharp knock against a worktop or a door frame can chip it. Treat it as you would a watch face rather than a plain band — take it off for anything heavy-handed and it will stay perfect.

3. Does it need a UK hallmark?

4. How do I find my size, and how does an adjustable band work?
The band is left open at the back, so it flexes across the range in the table rather than locking to one size. Ease it a little at a time, holding it on the plain silver sections and never across an enamel collar — flexing the band where the glass sits is the one thing that will crack it. 5. How do I clean it without harming the enamel?
Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid and your fingertips, then pat dry. Keep silver polishing cloths to the bare silver sections only, and keep the ring away from silver dips, ultrasonic cleaners, bleach and acetone entirely — all of them attack enamel, and a dip will dull it in seconds.
