Crown Lace Ring — A Coronet Worked in 925 Sterling Silver

A row of scalloped arches runs along the top edge of this band like the points of a small crown, and beneath them the silver opens into a pierced lace of linked circles, edged top and bottom with fine beading. It stands 5.2mm tall but is only 1.2mm thick, so for all its width it wears at 1.267g — light enough to forget, wide enough to notice. Solid 925 sterling silver throughout, with a matte finish that keeps the beading legible rather than letting it flare.

The crown predates the jewelled European kind by a long way, and its earliest form is exactly this: a circle with points rising from it. Greek victors wore wreaths of leaves, Roman emperors wore the radiate diadem, and both were simply a band with something standing up from the rim. The ornament was never the gold — it was the silhouette, the raised edge that reads as a crown from across a room. On where that vocabulary comes from, read Greek Jewellery: Beauty, Myth and Meaning.

💡 925 or 足銀 999 — why a ring is never pure silver

Pure silver (足銀 999, 99.9%) actually costs a little more per gram — but it is far too soft for a ring, and a band made from it goes out of round on the hand within weeks. 925 sterling silver adds 7.5% copper for hardness: that is what lets a band keep its shape and a polish keep its shine. The engineered choice, not the cheaper one. Genuine 925 develops a soft grey patina that polishes off — green in the grooves means base metal underneath. Full explanation in our 925 vs S925 guide, and day-to-day care on the Silver Care Card.

FAQs

1. Why is there no 925 stamp on this ring?
Because there is nowhere to put one. The band is pierced all the way through and beaded along both edges, which leaves no flat interior surface to take a mark without cutting into the pattern. It is solid 925 sterling silver — the missing stamp is a consequence of the design, not of the metal. If a stamped piece matters to you, almost everything else in the 925 collection carries one, and our guide to identifying genuine 925 covers the other ways to tell.

2. How can I tell it is really silver, then?
By how it behaves. Genuine sterling develops a soft grey or golden patina over months that polishes straight off with a cloth; plated base metal goes green in the recesses and stays green. Sterling is also non-magnetic and warms quickly to the hand. Our 925 vs S925 guide explains the fineness marks and what they actually certify.

3. Is it comfortable at 5.2mm wide?
Yes, more so than a solid band that width. At 1.2mm thick with the centre pierced out, there is very little metal against the finger, and the beaded edges are rounded rather than sharp. It does sit higher on the finger than a plain band, so it wants a little room at the knuckle.

4. How do I find my size, and how does an adjustable band work?
The band is left open at the back and flexes across the range in the table rather than locking to one size. Ease it open or closed a little at a time, holding it close to the opening rather than over the lace. If you are between sizes or buying as a gift, our UK ring size guide converts UK, US and EU sizes and shows how to measure a finger at home.

5. How do I clean a pierced, beaded band?
A soft dry brush through the openings and along the beading, then a light pass with a dry cloth on the arches. Keep it away from silver dips and ultrasonic cleaners, which strip the matte and take the definition out of the beadwork. Full guidance on the Silver Care Card and across JewelCare™.

How to Style the Crown Lace Ring

The scalloped edge gives it a direction, so it looks intentional worn points-up on the index or middle finger and quietly different worn the other way round. Against a plain narrow band on the same hand the lace reads as texture rather than fuss. Explore the full 925 Sterling Silver Jewellery collection and the Rings range, or see JewelGift™ for gifting.
