Cross Heart Ring — A Cross Engraved Inside a Heart

A single heart sits raised at the front of this ring, 5.7mm across and 4.8mm high, its outline traced by a rim of fine raised beads. Inside it a cross is cut into the face, left polished smooth against a finely stippled ground, so the two surfaces catch light differently and the shape stays legible at a size where a flat engraving would disappear. The band is built from rounded beads and polished links, carrying the texture all the way round the finger. 1.12g in solid 925 sterling silver.

A cross set inside a heart is one of the older compound symbols in devotional ornament: not faith and love side by side, but one held within the other. Medieval and Victorian mourning jewellery used the pairing constantly, and it still reads immediately today, which is what makes this a considered piece for a confirmation, a christening or a milestone rather than a general gift. There is a second, quieter detail too — the S925 mark is stamped inside a tiny raised heart on the inside of the band, so the ring carries a hidden heart only the wearer ever sees. Cut for roughly UK J to L. More on symbols at JewelMotif™, and on the heart itself in Why the Heart Became the Universal Symbol of Love.

💡 925 or 足銀 999 — why a ring is never pure silver

Pure silver (足銀 999, 99.9%) actually costs a little more per gram — but it is far too soft for a ring, and a band made from it goes out of round on the hand within weeks. 925 sterling silver adds 7.5% copper for hardness: that is what lets a band keep its shape, a setting keep its stone and a polish keep its shine. The engineered choice, not the cheaper one. Genuine 925 develops a soft grey patina that polishes off — green in the grooves means base metal underneath. Full explanation in our 925 vs S925 guide, and day-to-day care on the Silver Care Card.

FAQs

1. Is the cross engraved or raised?
Engraved into the heart, then left polished while the surrounding ground is stippled. That contrast is what makes it readable: at 5.7mm across, a cross cut into a flat surface would vanish, but a smooth cross against a textured field catches light as a bright shape. It is worked into the metal, not applied, so it cannot wear off — only soften with years of polishing.

2. Where is the hallmark?
Inside a tiny heart. Rather than stamping the flat inner band, the maker set the S925 mark into a small raised heart-shaped panel on the inside of the ring, so the mark and the motif are the same thing. Turn it under a lamp and you will see the heart shape first, then the digits. Our guide to identifying genuine 925 covers the other checks; at 1.12g the ring is well under the 7.78g UK hallmarking threshold and so is exempt from assay office marking.

3. Is this a small ring?
It is cut for roughly UK J–L, which is smaller than our usual M–O bands. That makes it a good choice for a slimmer ring finger, and a very good one for a little finger where the raised heart sits nicely. Check where you fall on the UK ring size guide first.

4. Is it suitable as a confirmation or christening gift?
It is one of the few pieces we make that reads clearly as a faith gift without being sombre — the cross is unmistakable, the heart keeps it warm, and the adjustable band means you do not need a size. See JewelGift™ for gift notes and presentation.

5. How do I clean it?
A soft dry cloth for the polished surfaces and a soft dry brush for the stippled ground and the beading. Avoid silver dips and ultrasonic cleaners — they flatten exactly the contrast this design depends on. Full guidance lives on the Silver Care Card and across JewelCare™.

How to Style the Cross Heart Ring

The engraved face gives this ring a clear front, so wear it where it can be seen rather than buried in a stack — a little finger on its own, or beside one plain band that lets the cross read. Explore Rings, the 925 Sterling Silver collection, or JewelBuild™.
