Rainbow Ring — Six Colours on a Beaded Band

The front of this ring is a flat polished bar carrying six coloured zirconia in a single line — magenta, navy, orange, green, clear and magenta again — and either side of it the band runs as two fine rows of beading, so the smooth stone-set section sits between two lines of texture. It is very slim: 1.2mm tall, 1.8mm thick, 0.766g of solid 925 sterling silver, stamped S925.

1. Are the stones real gemstones?
No, and we would not describe them as such. They are six coloured cubic zirconia. Zirconia is lab-grown and takes colour cleanly and consistently, which is exactly why a piece like this works — six matched natural gemstones in six different colours and one size would cost a hundred times more and still not match each other for tone. They are not graded gemstones, and the price reflects that honestly.

2. Will the colours fade?
No. The colour is through the stone rather than a coating on it, so it will not fade in sunlight, wash out, or wear off at the edges the way a dyed or coated stone does. What dulls them is a film of hand cream and soap, which is a cleaning problem rather than a fading one (see FAQ 5).

3. Does it need a UK hallmark?
No. UK law requires assay hallmarking on silver articles of 7.78g and above; at 0.766g this ring is nowhere near that, so it is exempt, and the S925 inside the band is the maker’s fineness mark rather than an assay office hallmark. Our guide to identifying genuine 925 explains what to look for.

4. How do I find my size, and how does an adjustable band work?
The band is left open at the back, so it flexes across the range in the table rather than locking to one size. Ease it a little at a time, holding the beaded shoulders near the opening and well away from the stone bar — never flex a set section. 5. How do I clean around six small stones?
Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid and a very soft brush worked along the line rather than at it, then pat dry — soap film under small stones is what makes coloured zirconia look tired.
