Gold-Plated Twist Ring — Warm Tone Over Fine Silver

A flat ribbon of metal taken in a long, easy twist, so the face turns over on itself and the light runs along the band in a moving line rather than sitting still on a flat surface. The ends taper and flare where the band opens at the back. Underneath the gold it is 999 fine silver, stamped 足銀 999 inside, 0.855g, 2mm tall and 2.5mm thick.

Gold is the only metal that does not tarnish, corrode or change, which is why almost every culture that found it treated it as the material of permanence before it was ever the material of wealth. A plated piece borrows that colour honestly and openly: what you get is gold's warmth at silver's price, on a base of fine silver rather than the copper alloys most plating sits on. The longer story is in Why Gold Became Humanity's Most Precious Metal.

💡 Gold over 足銀 999 — what is actually under the plating

Most gold-plated silver on the market is plated over sterling, which is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. This one is plated over 999 fine silver — 99.9% pure, with no copper beneath the gold at all. That is the part worth knowing, because the base metal is what you are left with as plating thins over the years, and fine silver is the better thing to be left with. We describe it as gold-plated rather than vermeil, because vermeil is a defined standard with a minimum plating thickness and we would rather understate it than claim a figure we cannot evidence. Care differs from solid silver — see the FAQs, and the Silver Care Card.

FAQs

1. Is this solid gold?
No, and we would never let that be unclear. It is gold plating over 999 fine silver — a thin layer of gold bonded to the surface, with solid fine silver underneath. Solid gold at this size would cost many times the price. What makes ours worth having is the base: fine silver rather than the brass or sterling most gold-plated jewellery is built on.

2. Will the gold wear off?
Plating is a surface, so over years of daily wear it thins, and it thins first where the ring rubs — the underside of the band against the neighbouring finger. That is normal for every plated piece ever made. How long it lasts is mostly about how you treat it (see FAQ 5). When it does wear through, what shows is fine silver, which is a far nicer thing to arrive at than base metal going green.

3. Why do you not call it vermeil?
Because vermeil is a defined standard, not a compliment. It requires a silver base — which this comfortably exceeds at 999 — and a minimum plating thickness, and we do not have a measured figure for the thickness. Rather than borrow a word we cannot evidence, we describe exactly what it is and let the fine silver base speak for itself.

4. How do I find my size, and how does an adjustable band work?
The band is left open at the back, so it flexes across the range in the table rather than locking to one size. Fine silver is soft, so it eases willingly — do it gently, near the opening, and rarely, because repeated flexing is hard on any plated surface. Our UK ring size guide converts UK, US and EU sizes and shows how to measure a finger at home.

5. How do I clean a gold-plated ring?
Differently from solid silver, and this matters. Never use a polishing cloth on the gold — a silver cloth is a mild abrasive and it will take plating off. No silver dips, no ultrasonic cleaners, no jewellery-cleaning solutions at all. Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, fingertips rather than a brush, then pat dry with something soft. Take it off before hand cream, perfume, swimming and washing up. Our Silver Care Card covers the base metal, and the Gold Care Card the surface.

How to Style the Gold-Plated Twist Ring

Gold against silver is the easiest two-tone there is, and a slim twisted band is the right shape to do it with — it reads as a warm line through a stack rather than a competing statement. Wear it beside plain sterling and let the colour do the work. Explore the full 925 Sterling Silver Jewellery collection and the Rings range, or see JewelGift™ for gifting.
