Silver Polishing Cloth – Anti-Tarnish Care for Sterling Silver, Since 1895

Every piece of silver dulls eventually — that is chemistry, not a flaw. This anti-tarnish polishing cloth is the simplest way to reverse it. Made in Great Britain by Town Talk from 100% cotton and impregnated with a cleaning and anti-tarnish agent, the cloth lifts sulphide tarnish away and leaves a bright, even shine behind. At 12.5cm x 17.5cm (5" x 7") it is generous enough for a whole tray of rings yet small enough to live in a jewellery box or handbag, ready whenever a piece from our 925 sterling silver collection needs reviving.

The soft pink cotton is deliberately unfussy: no water, no dips, no chemicals to rinse away. A light rub along the surface of a ring, chain or charm removes tarnish, and the residual anti-tarnish agent left on the metal slows the next build-up, so silver stays brighter for longer between cleans. The grey marks that appear on the cloth are the tarnish you have just removed — proof it is working, and a sign to keep using the same cloth rather than washing it. It suits every silver piece you own, from a delicate chain to a heavy statement band, and makes a quietly practical addition to any JewelGift™ parcel.

💡 Real Silver Checking Tip – The Tarnish Test

This cloth doubles as a quick authenticity check. Genuine 925 sterling silver develops a soft grey or golden patina that lifts onto the cloth as grey marks and leaves the metal bright underneath. If a piece leaves green residue instead, or refuses to brighten at all, you are likely looking at a plated base metal rather than solid silver. Keep the cloth away from soft stones, pearls and enamel, and never wash it — washing removes the very agent that does the work. Full guidance is on our Silver Care Card.

FAQs

1. Why does 925 sterling silver tarnish in the first place?
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with 7.5% other metals, usually copper, for strength — that is what the 925 hallmark means. Those trace metals react with sulphur compounds in air, perfume, skin and even paper, forming a dark surface layer. Tarnish is surface-level only: it never damages the silver beneath, which is why a treated cloth restores the shine rather than wearing the piece away. More on hallmarks and everyday silver care is on our JewelCare™ page.

2. How do I use a silver polishing cloth properly?
Work on dry, dust-free jewellery. Rub gently along the surface with short strokes rather than scrubbing in circles, using the cloth's printed side first, and fold it as sections darken so you always have a fresh area. For chains, draw the chain through the folded cloth a few inches at a time. Textured, oxidised or antiqued pieces need a lighter touch, since heavy polishing can lift the deliberate darkening from recessed grooves — see the Silver Care Card for piece-by-piece advice.

3. Can I use it on gold, stainless steel or gemstones?
It is formulated for silver, but it is safe for a gentle buff on solid gold and stainless steel too. Avoid porous or delicate materials — pearls, opal, turquoise, jade, enamel and plated costume finishes — where the agent and friction can dull the surface. If a piece mixes silver with stones or enamel, polish only the metal and keep the cloth clear of the setting.

4. How long does one cloth last, and can I wash it?
Do not wash it. Washing strips out the impregnated cleaning and anti-tarnish agent and leaves you with an ordinary piece of cotton. The cloth stays effective through many uses even as it turns grey, and the darkening is simply the tarnish it has lifted. Store it flat in its wallet, away from damp, and replace it when it no longer brightens metal after a firm rub.

5. Does it make a good gift?
It is one of the most useful small gifts you can pair with jewellery — the sort of thing people are pleased to own but rarely buy for themselves. Slip it in alongside a silver ring or chain so the piece can be kept bright from day one; our JewelGift™ philosophy is built around gifts that last rather than gifts that fade.

How to Use It in Your Routine

A quick pass every few weeks does more than an occasional deep clean: store silver dry and away from air, wipe it after wear, and give it thirty seconds with the cloth before it goes back in the box. Pair it with any piece from the 925 Sterling Silver collection, or visit JewelBuild™ to see how care fits into building a modular jewellery system you keep for years.

Our jewellery is crafted from high‑quality, skin‑friendly materials chosen for durability, comfort, and long‑lasting shine.

We use premium stainless steel for its water‑resistant and tarnish‑resistant properties, DuoTone™ titanium steel for its colour‑locked finish and daily‑wear strength, and fine jewellery alloys made from 58.5% (14k) or 75% (18k) pure gold, hallmarked for authenticity.

Every piece is designed to maintain its brilliance with minimal care, and we believe in full transparency — no hidden alloys, no misleading labels, and no surprises. You always know exactly what you’re wearing.
