Crystal Hanging Cat Charm - A Cat Dangling From a Star of Light

The most characterful piece in the range, and the only one that uses the jump ring as part of the design. A cat hangs by both front paws from a single round clear crystal set just beneath the ring, its body stretched full-length below, head tipped back, hind legs and tail swinging free. It is 25mm tall but only 6.2mm wide, cast in gold-tone stainless steel, and weighs 1.62g.

The proportions are the whole trick. Because the charm is so narrow it takes up almost no room on a bracelet, yet it hangs lower than anything else in the range - so it reads as movement rather than mass, and it swings noticeably as you use your hands. The crystal sits in a proper bezel cup rather than a claw, which is why it catches light at the top of the drop and draws the eye down the cat's body. Both sides are fully modelled.

FAQs

1. Is the stone a diamond?
No, and we will never call it one. It is a round clear crystal, bezel-set into a polished steel cup. It gives the same white flash at a fraction of the cost - which is what lets a charm this size sit under nine pounds.

2. Will it catch on clothing?
Less than you would expect. It is narrow and the outline is smooth, with no protruding claws around the stone - the bezel setting was chosen partly for that reason. It hangs low, though, so it is not the one to wear under a tight cuff.

3. Can the back be engraved?
No - the cat is sculpted on both sides. Our flat-backed charms are the ones for a name or a date.

4. Is it magnetic?
No - this one tests completely non-magnetic. Some steel charms respond slightly and some do not; both are normal, because cast stainless steel varies in ferrite content. Full explanation in Is Magnetic Steel Jewellery Fake?.

5. Why does it cost more than the other cats when it weighs less?
Because of the stone and the setting. A bezel has to be cut, the crystal seated and secured by hand, and that work costs more than the extra gram of steel in a solid charm. We price on what went into a piece, not only on what it weighs.

6. Would it work on a necklace?
Very well - it is the best pendant in the range because of the drop. On a fine chain the cat hangs below the collarbone and the crystal sits where it catches the light.
