Classic Lucky Elephant Charm - Trunk Up, Which Is the Whole Point
A walking elephant in gold-tone stainless steel, ears fanned, four legs mid-stride, and the trunk curling upward at the front - the detail that decides whether an elephant charm means anything at all. It measures 15.5mm wide by 14mm tall and 2.2mm deep, making it one of the few charms in the range that is wider than it is tall, which is why it sits so flat and calm against the wrist.
At 0.65g it is among the very lightest things we sell - only our openwork snail comes in under it. That sounds like a limitation and is actually the reason to buy it: on a bracelet already carrying four or five charms, this is the one you can add without the whole stack starting to swing and drag. It is modelled on both sides, high polished throughout, with no stones and no enamel to look after.

The direction of the trunk is the superstition. Raised, it is said to scoop up and hold good fortune; lowered, the luck runs out - which is why almost every elephant sold as a charm has its trunk in the air, and why a lowered one is worth noticing. Beyond luck the elephant carries memory, patience and the protective strength of something enormous that chooses to be gentle. Ganesha, remover of obstacles, is the same idea with a name. A gift for her starting something. More motif meanings at JewelMotif™ · Watch & read: Why We Wear Protective Jewellery Even When We're Safe
No stones and no enamel means nothing here can work loose. The gold tone is ion-plated onto stainless steel, far harder-wearing than the flash plating used on costume charms - keep it away from perfume, chlorine and abrasive cloths and it holds its colour. FAQs
1. It reacts slightly to a magnet - is that a problem?
No. Cast stainless steel normally contains a small amount of ferrite, deliberately, because it stops the metal cracking as it solidifies - that is what a magnet finds. Copper and brass are entirely non-magnetic, so a magnetic response actually rules them out. Full explanation in Is Magnetic Steel Jewellery Fake?.
2. Does the trunk really point up?
Yes - upward and forward, clearly, which is the version people look for. We would tell you if it did not; a lowered trunk reads as bad luck to a lot of customers and is not something to leave to the photograph.
3. Is 0.65g too light to feel like anything?
It is genuinely feather-light, and we have priced it accordingly rather than charging charm-band money for it. If you want an elephant with weight in the hand, this is not that piece - but if you want one you can add to a full bracelet, very little else comes close.
4. Can the back be engraved?
No - it is sculpted on both sides, so there is no plain panel. Our flat-backed charms are the ones for a name or a date.
5. How does it attach?
It comes on a jump ring, which sits over a chain link or a charm carrier. If you would rather clip it on and off by hand, we can add a small lobster clasp - just ask when you order.
6. Is it a good gift for luck?
It is the clearest luck symbol we stock - no card needed to explain it, and it suits a new job, a move, an exam or a birth equally. Every order arrives gift-ready - see JewelGift™.
How to Style the Lucky Elephant
Because it is wide and shallow it lies along the wrist rather than dangling, so it works well next to tall charms that need something horizontal beside them. Two or three small animals in a row on a FortunaLink™ bracelet reads as a set - it pairs particularly well with the flying pig for a good-fortune duo.
