Classic Snail Charm - Gold Stainless Steel Openwork Shell - 14.3x9mm
Classic Snail Charm - The Lightest Thing We Make
A small gold-tone stainless steel snail, body stretched forward with both antennae up, carrying a shell worked as an open spiral of pierced filigree. The body is smooth and high polished; the shell is cut right through, so the coil reads as a drawn line with light behind it rather than a solid disc. It measures 14.3mm wide by 9mm tall and 2.3mm deep.
At 0.56g this is the lightest piece in the entire catalogue - lighter than the elephant, and by some distance the least you can add to a wrist and still see something there. It is also unusually wide for its height, so it lies along a bracelet rather than dangling from it. Modelled and pierced on both faces, with no stones and no enamel.

The snail is the only creature that carries its home on its back, which is why it turns up in medieval manuscripts as a symbol of self-sufficiency and, later, of resurrection - the thing that withdraws completely and comes out again. Its shell grows in a logarithmic spiral, the same curve as a galaxy, which is a strange thing to find on a garden path. Worn small, it argues for arriving slowly rather than not arriving. A gift for her who is taking her time on purpose. More motif meanings at JewelMotif™ · Watch & read: How Meaning-Based Jewellery Works
No stones and no enamel means nothing here can work loose. The gold tone is ion-plated onto stainless steel, far harder-wearing than the flash plating used on costume charms - keep it away from perfume, chlorine and abrasive cloths and it holds its colour. FAQs
1. Is 0.56g too light to notice?
You will not feel it, and that is the point. It is the charm for a bracelet that is already full - it adds a motif without adding drag. If you want weight in the hand, choose something like our tiger or teddy bear instead.
2. Is the openwork shell delicate?
No. It is cast as one piece in stainless steel rather than pierced from thin sheet, so the spiral is structurally continuous - and steel is far harder than the silver or brass usually used for filigree at this price.
3. Can the back be engraved?
No - it is pierced through and modelled on both sides, so there is no plain panel. Our flat-backed charms are the ones for a name or a date.
4. Is it magnetic?
No - this one tests completely non-magnetic. Some steel charms respond slightly and some do not; both are normal, because cast stainless steel varies in ferrite content. Full explanation in Is Magnetic Steel Jewellery Fake?.
5. Why is it so inexpensive?
Because there is very little metal in it. We price our charms by what you are actually holding rather than by how intricate a piece looks in a photograph, and at 0.56g this is the least metal we sell.
How to Style the Snail
Wide and flat, so it lies along the wrist and works as a horizontal note between two upright charms - it is a useful shape on a stack where everything else dangles. Openwork also wants a little space to be read. Hang it on a FortunaLink™ bracelet, browse the whole MiniCharm™ range, or start your stack at JewelBuild™.
