Ruby & Diamond Ring – Deep Red in Hallmarked 18K Gold

An oval ruby measuring 5 x 4mm, approximately 0.65 carats, sits in four slim gold claws above a slender band — and rather than a crest or a halo, the shoulders carry two small panels of white gold, each channel-set with four round diamonds of 1mm. 1. What colour is a ruby, and why is this one darker than some?
Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral, corundum — red corundum is ruby, every other colour is sapphire. The red comes from chromium, and rubies run from purplish-red through pure red to orangey-red. Tone is what separates them: brighter, lighter stones return more light and read vivid, while deeper-toned rubies like this one hold a richer, more classical red that sits beautifully against yellow gold. 2. What does the 750 hallmark mean?
