Carved Amethyst Flower Earrings - Thirty Gemstones in 18k Gold
A hand-carved amethyst, veined like a petal and 14.75 carats across the pair, sits at the heart of each earring, and everything else is arranged around it: two peridots, two citrines, an aquamarine, a marquise emerald, an oval amethyst, an oval garnet, a heart-shaped garnet and five small diamonds, on every single earring. Thirty stones for the pair, 23.54 carats, all individually set in 18k solid gold stamped 750. Each measures 20mm across and 26.5mm tall; the pair weighs 16.5 grams.
This is the most complicated piece in the collection. Thirty settings, nine kinds of stone, eight different cuts, no two neighbours the same colour - and it still reads as one flower rather than as a scatter, which is the whole difficulty of this kind of work. The fitting is an omega clip with a post, so it suits pierced and unpierced ears equally and the lobe never carries the weight on its own.
The original paper tag is still tied to these earrings. It is dated 3/98 and lists every stone in the jeweller's own hand - 2x SC.Am 14.75, 4x O.CI 1.63, 10x RD 0.25 - the shorthand of someone counting stones into a setting tray. It also carries the price the shop asked for them, and it is the highest figure on any tag in this collection. Of everything Hong Kong Jade House made, this was the piece the maker put at the top of the case. It never sold, and it has been in a drawer ever since. Carving a gemstone into a leaf or petal, then setting it among loose coloured stones rather than matching them, is not a modern idea. It comes from Mughal India, where lapidaries carved emeralds, rubies and sapphires into foliage for four centuries before European jewellery had any use for them. In the 1920s Paris fell in love with those carved Indian stones and built a style around them - jewellers came to call it tutti frutti, the deliberate clash of red, green and blue in one piece. This pair belongs to that lineage, and pushes it further than most: a carved centre and eight different gems around it, none of which were meant to match. The stone names, counts and carat weights above are transcribed from the 1998 workshop tag, written by the jeweller who made the earrings. We have checked them against the photographs, but the pair is not accompanied by a laboratory certificate and we make no graded claim about colour, clarity or origin. Coloured stones of this kind are routinely heat-treated as standard trade practice, and emerald is almost always oiled. We would rather tell you what we know and what we do not than let a carat total imply more than it should.

1. Can I wear these if my ears are not pierced?
Yes. The omega clip closes behind the lobe and holds on its own; if your ears are pierced the post goes through as normal and the clip carries the weight. On an earring of this size that fitting is what makes it wearable all evening.
2. Thirty stones - are they really all set individually?
Yes. Every stone sits in its own bezel or claws, cut and closed by hand. There is no pave strip and no repeated calibrated row anywhere on the piece, which is why it took the workshop as long as it did.
3. How does it differ from the leaf pair?
Its sister piece has eighteen stones in a leaf-shaped frame and is taller and narrower. This one is wider, rounder, has thirty stones including ten diamonds rather than two, and carries the higher price on the workshop's own tag. They were made to be related, not identical.
4. How big and heavy is it?
20mm wide, 26.5mm tall, 16.5 grams for the pair. Roughly the footprint of a thumbnail, standing proud of the lobe.
5. How should I care for them?
Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner - emerald will not tolerate it and neither will the carved amethyst. Wipe with a soft cloth and a little warm soapy water on a soft brush at the edges, then dry fully. Keep amethyst out of prolonged direct sunlight, and take them off before perfume and hairspray.
