A leaf of amethyst, hand-carved with its veins cut into the stone, sits at the centre of each earring inside an openwork gold frame drawn as a leaf itself. Around it: a heart of aquamarine, a marquise emerald, an oval peridot, an oval citrine, an oval amethyst, a square sapphire, a pear-shaped ruby and one round diamond. Eighteen stones across the pair, 18.15 carats in total, set in 18k solid gold stamped 750. Each earring measures 18.5mm across and 32mm tall; the pair weighs 15.93 grams.

The fitting is an omega clip with a post through it, so these suit pierced and unpierced ears equally - the hinged lever folds up behind the lobe and takes the weight, which is what a piece this size needs. 1. Can I wear these if my ears are not pierced?
Yes. The omega clip closes behind the lobe and holds on its own; if your ears are pierced the post goes through as normal and the clip carries the weight. For an earring of this size that dual fitting is the difference between comfortable and not.

2. Is the amethyst leaf carved by hand?
Yes - you can see it in the veins. They vary in depth and spacing across the stone and differ slightly between the two earrings, which is what hand-cut work looks like. A moulded or machine-cut stone repeats exactly.

3. How big are they on the ear?
18.5mm wide and 32mm tall, so a little over three centimetres from the top of the lobe. They read as a proper occasion earring. At 15.93 grams for the pair the clip does the work, not the piercing.

4. Are all the stones natural?
They are natural gemstones rather than synthetics or glass, listed as recorded by the workshop. As the note above says, we hold no certificate for them and coloured stones at this level are commonly heat-treated.

5. How should I care for them?
Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner - emerald in particular will not tolerate it. Wipe with a soft cloth and a little warm soapy water on a brush at the edges, then dry fully. Keep amethyst out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can pale it over years, and take the earrings off before perfume and hairspray.
