Malachite Stud Earrings - Banded Green Cabochons in Solid Gold
One oval malachite cabochon on each ear, 11.5 x 15.5mm of stone and 12 x 16mm including the gold, domed and polished so the bands run in soft light and dark stripes across the surface. No two are alike, and these two are close but not identical - malachite grows in layers and every cabochon cuts a different section through them. The pair weighs 6.32 grams in 14k solid gold, hallmarked 585 on the back.
Two details are worth pointing out. The bezel is not plain: its outer rim carries a fine chased pattern, cut by hand, which catches light where a smooth edge would go flat. And the fitting is an omega clip with a post through it - the hinged lever folds up behind the lobe and grips. Malachite is a copper carbonate and sits at only 3.5 to 4 on the hardness scale - softer than a steel blade, and far softer than quartz. It scratches easily, it dislikes heat, and acids will etch it, so perfume, hairspray, vinegar and household cleaners all need to go on before the earrings do. Never put it in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner and never soak it: water can work into the banding over time. Wipe with a barely damp soft cloth and dry at once. Handled sensibly it lasts indefinitely - the Egyptian pieces in museums are proof - but it is not a stone to be careless with.

1. Can I wear these if my ears are not pierced?
Yes. The omega clip closes behind the lobe and holds on its own. If your ears are pierced, the post goes through as normal and the clip adds security on top. That dual fitting is one of the best things about this pair.
2. Is the malachite natural?
Yes, natural malachite, not reconstituted or dyed. You can see it in the banding: the stripes are irregular and continue over the curve of the dome, which is what a solid natural cabochon does and a pressed imitation does not.
3. How large are they on the ear?

4. Will the two stones match exactly?
