Sapphire & Diamond Ring – Midnight Blue on a Split Shank, 14K Gold

Barely there, and that is the appeal. At 1.85 grams this is the lightest piece in our fine range — a slim split shank in hallmarked 14K gold that divides into two fine strands before meeting the setting, so the ring reads as line rather than weight. At its centre, an oval sapphire of roughly 5.7 x 4.0mm and approximately 0.6 carats sits in four gold claws, with two round diamonds of about 1.2mm stacked to each side — four in total, around 0.032ct together, doing nothing more than punctuating the blue.

The stone itself is a deep midnight blue, and it is worth looking closely: you can see fine internal silk and a soft band of paler colour running through it. Those are not flaws to apologise for — they are exactly what a natural sapphire looks like. 1. Does this ring come with a gemstone certificate?
No — it is sold uncertificated, and we would rather say so plainly. The gold carries an independently struck 585 hallmark; the stone measurements, carat estimates and ring weight are our own, taken in-house. That is normal for individually sourced fine jewellery at this level, where laboratory certification often costs more than it adds. Any gemmologist can examine the stone after purchase, and our returns window gives you time to do so.

2. Are sapphire and ruby the same stone?
Yes — both are corundum. Red corundum is called ruby; every other colour, including this blue, is sapphire. Blue comes from traces of iron and titanium, red from chromium. That shared identity puts sapphire at 9 on the Mohs scale, making it one of very few coloured stones genuinely suited to everyday wear. 3. What is a split shank, and does it make the ring weaker?
The band divides into two fine strands as it approaches the setting, then rejoins at the back. It frames the stone with negative space so a modest sapphire reads larger, and it gives the ring visual movement from above. Structurally it is sound — the two strands share the load — but it does mean the front of the ring should not be squeezed or forced onto a finger, and resizing needs a jeweller who will keep both strands symmetrical.

4. What does the 585 hallmark mean?
585 parts pure gold per 1,000 — 14 karat, or 58.5% gold. (750 is 18k; 375 is 9k.) 14K is the harder of the two fine-gold standards, which matters on a band this slim: it holds its round shape and resists bending better than 18K would. 5. What is UK N1/2, and will it fit me?
N1/2 is the half size between N and O — US 7, EU 54, with a 17.2mm internal diameter and a 54mm circumference. 6. Is it strong enough to wear daily?
The stones are: sapphire at 9 and diamond at 10 on the Mohs scale are about as hard-wearing as gems get. The consideration is the band, not the gems — at 1.85g this is a delicate ring, so avoid gripping heavy objects, take it off for the gym and manual work, and store it flat rather than loose in a drawer where it can be crushed. Treated sensibly it will outlast you.
