Emerald & Diamond Fluted Band – Over a Carat of Green in Two-Tone 14K Gold

An emerald-cut emerald of roughly 7.4 x 5.8mm and approximately 1.01 carats sits square in the centre of this band, gripped at the corners by four substantial yellow-gold claws. What surrounds it is the reason to look twice: a broad panel of deeply fluted gold, cut into parallel ridges that run the full width of the ring, catching light in hard bright lines rather than a smooth sheen. Above and below, two bands of 36 pavé diamonds — about 0.41 carats together — are set into white gold, framing the fluting like rails.

1. What is an emerald cut, and why use it on an emerald?
It is a rectangular step cut — long flat facets in parallel rows, with the corners clipped off. It was developed for this gem specifically, for two reasons. Practically, the clipped corners protect a brittle stone at its weakest points during setting. Aesthetically, step facets give broad slow flashes instead of fine sparkle, so you look into the stone and see the depth of the green rather than light skating across it. 2. There are marks inside the emerald — is that a fault?
No. Those are jardin — French for garden — the fine internal veils and crystals formed as the emerald grew. Virtually every natural emerald has them, and gemmologists use them to distinguish a genuine stone from a synthetic one, which comes out of the furnace clean. A flawless, evenly coloured green stone at this size would be laboratory-grown or an imitation. Jardin is the emerald's fingerprint, not its flaw.

3. Does this ring come with a gemstone certificate?
No — it is sold uncertificated, and we would rather say so plainly. The gold carries an independently struck 585 hallmark and a maker's mark; the stone measurements, carat estimates and ring weight are our own, taken in-house. That is normal for individually sourced fine jewellery, where laboratory certification often costs more than it adds. 4. What does the fluted texture do?
It changes how the gold behaves in light. A flat polished band reflects as one broad sheet; cutting it into parallel ridges breaks that into a series of hard bright lines that shift as the hand moves, so the metal reads as active rather than static. 585 is the fineness stamp for 14 karat — 585 parts pure gold per 1,000, or 58.5%. N1/2 is the half size between N and O — US 7, EU 54, with a 17.2mm internal diameter and a 54mm circumference. Measure against those figures rather than guessing, and bear in mind a wide band always feels tighter than a slim one at the same size.
