Amethyst Stud Earrings - Oval Lilac Stones in Plain Gold Claws

One oval amethyst on each ear, 8 x 6mm, held in four plain gold claws and nothing else. The colour is a soft lilac that deepens toward the middle of the stone and pales at the edges, with visible zoning through the body and a faint amber flash where the light catches the culet - the marks of quartz that grew slowly rather than being made quickly. Approximately 2.0 carat across the pair. The mount is deliberately minimal: the whole pair weighs 1.245 grams in 14k solid gold, on push-back posts.

There is a decision behind how little metal is here. A heavier setting would hold the stone more securely and look more valuable in a photograph, but it would also put gold between your eye and the amethyst on every side. Four thin claws and an open back let daylight through the stone from behind, which is the only way a pale purple ever looks alive - shut the light out and lilac goes grey. These are made to be worn where there is light.

5. How should they be cleaned?
