Fu Blessing Heart Earrings - Large Apple Green Jade Hearts

Two substantial hearts of natural jade, each about 20.5 x 20.5mm, hanging from small openwork gold plaques cut through with the character fu. A second, smaller fu roundel sits on a gold bar across the face of each heart, so the blessing appears twice on every earring - once above the stone and once on it. The jade is a soft apple green, semi-translucent, with the faint cloudiness that light travels into rather than bouncing off. Set in 14k solid gold, post fitting with butterfly backs.

Stones this size are what makes the pair unusual. A 20mm jade heart is a slab, not a chip - it has to be cut from rough big enough and even enough in colour to survive being ground down to a symmetrical shape twice over, once for each ear. The gold does almost nothing except hold and mark them: a plaque, a bar, two pierced characters. Everything else is stone.

Tips of the Motif - Fu, Twice Over

Fu is the character for blessing or good fortune, and it is the one most likely to be somewhere in a Chinese home at any moment - pasted on a doorway at New Year, often upside down, because "fu is upside down" and "fu has arrived" sound almost the same. Repeating a character was never treated as redundancy in Chinese design but as emphasis: doubled happiness, doubled blessing. Two fu on one earring is a deliberate wish said twice. A generous gift for her at a new year, a wedding, or a milestone. More motif meanings at JewelMotif™ · Watch & read: Why We Trust Symbols More Than Words

Real Jade Checking Tip - Look Into the Stone, Not At It

On a piece this large you can see straight into the material, which is the best test available without a lab. Natural jade takes light a little way in before it scatters, giving a soft glow with faint cloudiness inside. Dyed stone tends to look flat and painted at the surface with colour gathering along fractures, and resin-filled material reads glassy and slightly too bright. These stones are natural. FAQs

1. How big are they on the ear?
Each jade heart is about 20.5mm across - roughly the width of a thumbnail and a half - with the gold plaque above it. These are a statement pair, not a discreet one.

2. Why does the fu character appear twice?
Once on the openwork plaque at the lobe and once on the small roundel set across the stone. Repetition in Chinese design means emphasis rather than duplication, in the same way double happiness is written twice.

3. Is the jade natural?
Yes - natural jade. At this size you can see the colour sitting in the body of the stone rather than on its surface, which is the clearest evidence there is short of laboratory testing.

4. Are they heavy to wear?
They have real presence, and jade is a dense material, so you will know they are on. The weight hangs from a jointed link rather than pulling directly on the post, which spreads the load across the lobe.

5. How should a large jade piece be looked after?
Carefully, because size is the risk. Jade resists breaking far better than it resists scratching, but a 20mm stone has room to catch on a hard edge, so store it alone in a soft pouch. Warm water, mild soap, soft cloth; no ultrasonic cleaners, no sudden heat. Full guidance on our Jade Care Card, and for the gold, the Gold Care Card.

How to Style the Fu Blessing Hearts

Wear them alone. Stones this size want a bare neckline and nothing competing - no necklace, no patterned collar, hair back or up. They are the pair for a family dinner, a new year, a wedding. Explore the full 14k and 18k Gold collection, browse more Earrings, or visit JewelBuild™.
