Crystal Gem Star Charm - Gold Stainless Steel - 12x15mm
A Four-Point Star Built Around an Oval
A four-pointed star in gold-tone stainless steel, with an oval clear crystal of 5mm by 4mm claw-set in a scrolled gold surround at the centre, and one smaller round crystal set at each of the four points. The scrollwork between the points is cut away rather than solid, so the outline reads as open and the whole piece stays airy at 12mm wide by 15mm tall.
At 0.7g it is the second-lightest charm in this release and one of the lightest we make - unusual for something with five set stones and this much presence. The openwork is what does it: there is very little solid metal here beyond the setting itself.
| Material | Gold-tone stainless steel |
| Size | 12mm wide x 15mm tall x 2.8mm thick |
| Weight | 0.7g |
| Design | Four-point star, oval 5 x 4mm crystal in a scrolled centre, one round crystal at each point |
| Reverse | Gold relief - the scrollwork and settings come through from the front; not a flat panel |
| Detail | Five clear glue-set crystals - one oval centre and four round points. Gold-tone. Slightly magnetic |
Choose Charm only to add it to a bracelet you already own. Charm + Clasp adds a small lobster clasp so it clips straight on - no pliers, no open links - and it works just as well on a bag, a zip pull, a keyring or a watch strap. Charm + Gold Chain or Charm + Silver Chain pairs it with our Gold or Silver Paperclip Chain Bracelet - fine-gauge stainless steel, adjustable from 16cm to 20cm. Bought as a set they cost 30% less than buying separately.
Four points rather than five or six is a specific choice with a specific history. The five-point star belongs to flags and the six-point to religion, but the four-point - the sparkle, the twinkle, the compass rose - has always meant orientation and brightness rather than allegiance. Mariners' charts drew it at the meeting of the cardinal directions long before anyone put one on jewellery, and it is still the shape used to draw a glint of light in everything from comics to cosmetics packaging. It says this direction, and it is shining. A gift for her who already knows which way she is going. More motif meanings at JewelMotif™ · Watch & read: The First Language of Jewellery
All five crystals are glue-set, and the four point stones sit proud on an open frame where they are more exposed than a flush setting would be - so mind it against door handles and coat sleeves. Showers, swimming pools, hot tubs and ultrasonic cleaners attack the adhesive rather than the stones; take it off first. A dry soft cloth, and a soft dry brush through the openwork. FAQs
1. Are these diamonds?
No. They are clear crystals - glue-set rhinestones, not diamonds and not cubic zirconia. One 5 x 4mm oval at the centre and four small round ones at the points.
2. Can the back be engraved?
No. The reverse carries the scrollwork and the settings in gold relief, so there is no flat surface. The Pave Arch (IHSMC069) is the engravable back in this release.
3. Is 0.7g too light?
It is genuinely feather-light, and with five stones on it that is unusual - the openwork between the points removes most of the metal. If you want weight, the Hollow Heart (IHSMC064) at 2.47g is the other end of this release.
4. It reacts slightly to a magnet - is that a problem?
No. Cast stainless steel normally contains a small amount of ferrite, deliberately, because it stops the metal cracking as it solidifies - that is what a magnet finds. Brass and copper are entirely non-magnetic, so a magnetic response actually rules them out. Full explanation in Is Magnetic Stainless Steel Jewellery Fake?.
5. Does it arrive gift-ready?
Yes - every order is packed to give. See JewelGift™.
How to Style the Gem Star
Openwork charms sit well against solid ones - hang it beside a plain heart and the cut-away frame does the contrast for you. It is also small and light enough to wear on a fine necklace chain rather than a bracelet. Hang it on a DuoTone™ or FortunaLink™ bracelet, browse the whole MiniCharm™ range, or start your stack at JewelBuild™.
