Oval Swiss Blue Topaz in an Openwork Scroll Frame - 14K Gold

An oval Swiss blue topaz of roughly 4.19 carats sits in four rounded claws at the centre of a pierced scroll frame - four sweeping curves of polished gold that loop out from the stone and back like petals, leaving open air between them so light reaches the girdle from every side. Four small round brilliant diamonds are set into the scrolls, one at each shoulder pair. In solid 14K (585) yellow gold at 3.48 grams, the openwork keeps the ring light while giving it a face far larger than its weight suggests. See the rest of the 14K & 18K Fine Gold collection for more in this vein.

Swiss blue is the mid-tone of the three commercial topaz blues, and it is the one that holds its colour best under artificial light - paler Sky blue can wash out, deeper London Blue can go almost navy indoors. This stone reads vivid and even from any angle, which is what an oval brilliant cut is for: rows of triangular and kite-shaped facets that break light into flashes rather than showing you a window into the stone. Where an emerald cut asks for a flawless gem, a brilliant cut asks for good colour and gives back sparkle. On a saturated blue like this one, that is the right trade. More on how stones are cut, treated and traded is on our JewelWhy™ pages.

Wearing Tip - Hard Is Not the Same as Tough

Topaz sits at Mohs 8, which puts it above quartz and above almost anything it will meet in ordinary wear - it resists scratching very well. But it also has perfect basal cleavage: a single internal plane along which the crystal will part cleanly if it takes a knock at exactly the wrong angle. The open gallery here protects the stone from beneath while the four claws hold the girdle, so the risk is small. Practically: no ultrasonic cleaner, no sudden hot-to-cold, and off before anything with impact. Warm soapy water and a soft brush is the whole routine. See our JewelCare™ pages.

FAQs

1. What does "Swiss blue" mean?
It is a trade term for intensity, not a place - no topaz comes from Switzerland. The three commercial grades are Sky blue, the palest; Swiss blue, the vivid mid-tone; and London Blue, the deepest, an inky blue with a slight grey-green cast. All three are the same mineral given colour by the same process, and they differ only in how far the treatment was taken. Swiss is generally the most versatile, because it stays bright under indoor lighting where London Blue can read almost black.

2. Is the blue natural, and will it last?
The colour is created rather than mined: natural blue topaz exists but is rare and very pale, so essentially all blue topaz sold worldwide starts as colourless topaz and is irradiated and then heated to bring out the blue. This has been routine since the 1970s. The change is structural, not a coating or dye, so the colour is permanent and will not fade with sunlight, washing or years of wear. We would rather tell you plainly than let the word "natural" do quiet work it has not earned.

3. How can I tell blue topaz from aquamarine?
Three ways. Colour: topaz is a pure electric blue that holds one tone as you rotate it, aquamarine is softer with a green undertone and visibly shifts. Weight: topaz is roughly 30% denser, so it feels heavier than an aquamarine of equal size. And optically, a refractometer is definitive - topaz reads 1.61 to 1.64, aquamarine 1.57 to 1.59. Any high-street jeweller can check in a couple of minutes.

4. Why is the frame pierced rather than solid?
Two reasons, one visual and one practical. Openwork lets light in from the sides and underneath, so a transparent stone glows rather than sitting on a dark metal bed - it makes the colour livelier. And it gives the ring a large presence for very little gold: this piece has a wide face on only 3.48 grams. The trade-off is that pierced galleries collect dust, so a soft brush through the gaps every few weeks keeps the stone bright.

5. What does topaz symbolise?
Topaz has been linked with clarity of mind and honest speech since antiquity, and blue topaz in particular with calm and clear communication. It is November's birthstone, sharing the month with citrine, and blue topaz marks a fourth wedding anniversary. The name may descend from Topazios, a Red Sea island the Greeks mined - though the stone found there was probably peridot, a mix-up that has stuck for two thousand years. More on symbolism is on our JewelMotif™ page.

6. Does it make a good gift?
It gives a lot of visible colour for the money, which is exactly what you want in a gift piece - a four-carat vivid blue stone framed in solid gold reads far more generously than its price. Pair it with a November birthday or a fourth anniversary and it arrives with a reason attached. Our JewelGift™ philosophy is built around gifts that outlive the occasion.

How to Style It

The scroll frame gives this ring a wide, rounded face, so it wants to sit alone - on the index or middle finger, where there is room either side for the openwork to be seen. Keep the same hand plain, or echo it with a narrow polished yellow band on another finger. The blue is strong enough to carry an outfit by itself, so treat it as the colour rather than an accent to something else.
