Pearl Collar Bear Charm - A Teddy in a Ruff of Pearls

A small standing bear in polished gold-tone stainless steel, wearing a full collar of round cream pearls that circles the neck like a ruff. 1. Are the pearls real?
No - they are imitation pearls, and we would rather say so plainly. They give the same soft lustre against gold that makes the design work, at a price that keeps the charm wearable every day. They still need pearl-level care, which is the part worth knowing.

2. Why pearls rather than crystals?
Because they do the opposite job. Crystals sparkle and draw the eye sharply; pearls glow and calm a piece down. In a stack of heavily set charms this one provides the pause, which is what makes the sparkling pieces beside it read properly.

3. It reacts slightly to a magnet - is that a problem?
No. Cast stainless steel normally contains a small amount of ferrite, deliberately, because it stops the metal cracking as it solidifies - that is what a magnet finds. 7. How do I care for the pearl?
The steel body is tarnish-resistant and hypoallergenic, but the pearl collar is the delicate part of this piece. Keep it away from perfume, hairspray, hand sanitiser and cleaning solutions, all of which dull a pearl surface permanently, and never put it in an ultrasonic cleaner.
