Gold Polishing Cloth - For 14k 18k Gold & Platinum - 12.5 x 17.5cm
Gold Polishing Cloth – Restoring Shine to Gold and Platinum Since 1895
Gold does not tarnish, but it does dull. Skin oils, hand cream, hairspray and everyday dust settle into a polished surface and quietly flatten its glow. This Town Talk Gold Polishing Cloth is made for exactly that: 100% cotton, impregnated with a gentle cleaning agent, and formulated for gold and platinum rather than silver. A light buff lifts the film away and brings back the warm depth that made you choose a piece from our 14k & 18k gold collection in the first place. Made in Great Britain by Town Talk, by appointment to HM King Charles III as manufacturers of silver polishes and cleaners.
At 12.5cm x 17.5cm (5" x 7") the soft pink cloth is large enough to work a chain through in sections yet small enough to keep in a jewellery box. It needs no water, no dips and nothing to rinse away, which is what makes it safe for the pieces people are most nervous about cleaning — a wedding band worn daily, an inherited signet, a gemstone ring where you want to brighten the metal without touching the setting. Reusable and long-lasting for as long as it is not washed, it is the sort of quietly useful thing that belongs alongside any JewelGift™ parcel.

Before you polish, look for the hallmark. In the UK, 375 means 9k, 585 means 14k and 750 means 18k — the number is the parts of pure gold per thousand. Solid gold does not tarnish and will not leave a green or black mark on your skin; if a piece discolours the finger or shows a different metal at a worn edge, you are looking at gold plate over a base metal, which needs a lighter touch since the plating is thin. Never wash the cloth, and wash your hands after use. Full guidance is on our Gold Care Card.
FAQs
1. Does gold tarnish — and if not, why does mine look dull?
Pure gold does not tarnish, and neither does platinum. What dulls them is a surface film of skin oils, soap residue, hand cream, perfume and dust, plus microscopic scratches from daily wear. Lower karats contain more alloy metal, so 9k can darken slightly where 18k will not. A polishing cloth removes the film and burnishes the surface back to brightness; it does not remove metal. More on karats and hallmarks is on our JewelCare™ page.
2. What is the difference between this and the silver polishing cloth?
The silver cloth carries an anti-tarnish agent designed to strip silver sulphide and leave a protective residue behind — a job gold never needs. This gold cloth is gentler, formulated to clean and shine gold, platinum and other metals without that tarnish-removing chemistry. Using a silver cloth on gold is not dangerous, but this one is the correct tool, particularly for softer high-karat gold.
3. Can I use it on rings set with diamonds, sapphires or pearls?
Polish the metal, not the stone. Hard stones such as diamond, sapphire and ruby tolerate a gentle buff on the surrounding band, and brightening the metal makes the stone look livelier by contrast. Keep the cloth away from pearls, opal, turquoise, emerald and any glued or foil-backed setting, where friction and residue can dull the surface. Work slowly around claws so nothing catches.
4. How do I clean a gold chain with it?
Lay the chain flat, fold the cloth over a few centimetres at a time and draw the chain gently through, moving along its length rather than rubbing in circles. Do the clasp last. For heavily textured, rope or oxidised designs, use a light hand — hard polishing can lift the deliberate darkening from recessed grooves, which is the one thing this cloth cannot put back. See the Gold Care Card for piece-by-piece advice.
5. How long does it last, and can I wash it?
Do not wash it. Washing removes the impregnated cleaning agent and leaves you with an ordinary piece of cotton. The cloth keeps working through many uses even as it discolours, so store it flat in its wallet away from damp and replace it when a firm buff no longer brightens the metal. Keep it out of reach of children and wash your hands after use.
How to Use It in Your Routine
Little and often beats an annual rescue: wipe a piece after wear, keep it out of hairspray and hand cream, and give it thirty seconds with the cloth before it goes back in the box. Pair it with any piece from the 14k & 18k Gold collection, or visit JewelBuild™ to see how care fits into building a modular jewellery system you keep for years.
Our jewellery is crafted from high‑quality, skin‑friendly materials chosen for durability, comfort, and long‑lasting shine.
We use premium stainless steel for its water‑resistant and tarnish‑resistant properties, DuoTone™ titanium steel for its colour‑locked finish and daily‑wear strength, and fine jewellery alloys made from 58.5% (14k) or 75% (18k) pure gold, hallmarked for authenticity.
Every piece is designed to maintain its brilliance with minimal care, and we believe in full transparency — no hidden alloys, no misleading labels, and no surprises. You always know exactly what you’re wearing.

Caring for Your JewelHub Piece
Every JewelHub piece is made to be worn and enjoyed. A little regular care keeps it looking its best for longer.
| Storage | Keep in your JewelHub velvet pouch when not wearing — protects against dust and scratches |
| Cleaning | Wipe gently with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth after wearing |
| Handling | Remove before applying perfume, lotions, or hairspray — chemicals dull most finishes over time |
| Water | When in doubt keep it dry — stainless steel is water-safe but most other materials prefer to stay dry |
