Pink Sapphire Cluster Earrings - Eight Ovals in a Gold Spray
Four faceted oval stones to each ear, eight across the pair, 2.22 carat in total and roughly 4.2 x 3.5mm each. The colour runs from a vivid hot pink through to a deeper purplish rose, and the stones are claw-set at overlapping angles inside a spray of gold leaves and ribbon curls, with one small round diamond set to the outer edge of each earring. The pair weighs 4.67 grams in 14k solid gold, on posts with clip fittings.
Overlapping the stones is what gives this piece its depth. Set flat and level, eight ovals would read as a panel; tilted against each other at different heights they catch light separately, so one flares while its neighbour goes dark and the whole cluster flickers as you move. The gold leafwork behind them is doing the structural job of holding four stones at four different angles while looking like it is only decoration.

Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral - corundum. Red corundum is called ruby; every other colour is called sapphire. The whole distinction rests on where you draw the line between red and pink, and there is no agreed answer: one major laboratory calls a stone ruby only when red is clearly dominant, while the international coloured stone trade has historically called any red-family corundum ruby, however pale. Two labs can disagree about the same stone. These are clearly pink rather than red, so we describe them as pink sapphires, which is the accurate term for corundum of this colour. You will see identical material sold elsewhere as pink ruby. Same stone, same mine, different word.
Look across all eight stones rather than at one. Natural corundum shows colour zoning - a stone slightly deeper at one end, one neighbour a touch more purple than the rest, small internal marks under a loupe. That variation is normal and reassuring. Laboratory-made corundum, which has existed since the early 1900s and is the same material chemically, tends to be flawlessly clean and identical stone to stone. These vary as natural stones do. 1. Are these rubies or sapphires?
They are pink corundum, which is the same mineral as both. Because the colour is clearly pink rather than red, pink sapphire is the accurate description - though the same stones are commonly sold as pink ruby, and the trade has never fully agreed where the line falls.
2. How many stones are there?
Eight pink sapphires, four to each earring, 2.22 carat in total. Plus one small round diamond on each earring, set at the outer edge.
3. Are there really diamonds on these?
Yes - one on each earring, easy to miss because it sits out at the edge of the gold spray rather than in the cluster. Small, but real.

5. Are they hard-wearing?
